You know the blog is pretty screwed up when the live feed doesn't show a single person from Malaysia viewing it but rather weird ass connections from places half of us haven't even heard from. Russia, Brazil, Chile, Iraq....SERIOUSLY?

Uhm anyway, most of us are either turning 22 or 23 this year (which is bloody old IMO) and we're all supposed to be doing respectable adult stuff soon i.e. work, what were you all thinking?

Hmmm, I don't even know why I started this post actually, OK, maybe I would like to do a little self rant about things I discovered about myself in the past year or so:

Hi guys, wow how long has it been ? Anyone still visits here ?

The year 2010 and it is almost 5 years since we were last in 5S1. Everyone has grown up, everyone has the lives ahead of them.

But one beautiful thing remains, and that is the memory of us being friends and that no matter how far apart we are, how long we've not seen each other, how weird it would be to talk to one another, or just how vague our memories of each other may be, we still shared the memories.

I saw a quote on one of those fridge magnets at my cousin's place. It said,

"We do not remember the days. We remember the memories."

I thought it was just so appropriate.

Anyway, just wana do some catching up, who's in Malaysia right now ? I know many of us are graduating this year.

This is, shamelessly, another post from me. :P

I just attended my church friend's graduation (from the Christian International School of Prague, a high school here). It was a really sweet informal ceremony to celebrate the lives of seven loved kids. We got to see baby photos! And each of them gave a little speech to thank their parents, God, teachers and friends.

It kinda reminded me of our graduation. I remember how Rachel K started tearing beside me in the hall. I remember how Xing Ji cried non-stop, even after we got back to class. :D I remember Tim holding back tears, too! And I remember all the hugs, all the laughter and all the good times. And I remember how I wished school never had to end.

Well, we all need to grow up someday - if not by choice, by the forces of nature. But I'll always be glad to have been able to be a part of 5S1. Thank God for all of you.

revisiting the past

Sometimes the past is never forgotten, merely hidden. And all it takes is a dream or two, or a nostalgic moment, or the familiar din of silence to bring back in remembrance all that has been thought to be forgotten.

If there's one thing I miss about CHS, it's knowing that every day I belong. CHS and 5S1 was like family to me. Every time after a holiday, as I trudged down the 'lorong' into the canteen, greeted by sleepy-looking students, to get into the Ed-Board room, I feel a grin spreading from ear to ear on my face, knowing that I belong, that I'm part of this whole establishment, and knowing that I'm not alone.

Knowing that we all have one goal, to get through high school, and that we were going to get through high school together. Knowing that if we were sad, there would be friends reading our expressions, prepared to lend a listening ear, to let us know that we are not alone in this phase of life.

Knowing that at every corner, there would be laughter, be it laughing off a nickname, a tease, an embarrassing moment. Knowing that at the end of the day, no hard feelings will remain, knowing that we are truly friends, and our basis is innocence. We may not know everyone personally, but everyone knows us and we were accepted the way we are.

We grew up together, from beginning to end, we faced the praises and storms of teachers together, we backed each other up.

I still remember how from 3A1, Yin Shean backed even our notorious friends who tied up poor Zhen Yuan and left him on the corridor of 3A2 face-to-face with our teacher, who stormed into our class and demanded to see the culprits who dared to defy discipline.

I still remember how difficult it was to get the class to do things, and yet at the end, we pulled every drama, every presentation, every exam off so well. :)

I still remember many stories from the days of good ol' CHS. Invisible in my grown-up everyday, but still so real in my heart.

Where are we at now?

Does it matter?

All of you always will, to me. :)

School bizzz...

Bio - We learned abuot our skeleton frame today and Pn. See brought out a whole skeleton set for us to see. Cool! Anyway, (wazzit Xing Ji or Si Yi) some guy, for the benefit of an uproar arranged the bones of the hands in such a way that it portrayed a thinker's pose...

Hahahahaha...!

And the guys also manged to dislocate the skull from its proper position. Oh, boy.

Soon, it was the girls' turn to inspect our new source of curiosity when (don't ask me how) the whole group conversation (with teacher providing explanations) reverted to sexual reproduction. Now, how on EARTH did that happen?!! Oh, man. We're giving ourselves a bad name! Somehow, all those facts make me feel more... fragile. Ouch. Eek.

Science has never been so fascinating..

Physics - Rachel Kwan had a fit of sleepiness - a jolly good thing she didn't pass it on to me... then for some apparent reason, she burst into incessant laughter for several minutes after some conversation with Darell. Conclusion: Science One students are utter nuts who crack up for no reason due to excessive stress. Complacency? More like, critical emotional instability and easily berserk-ed laughing receptors.

Chemistry - Haha! I had a real good laugh at this one... We were conducting 'Garam' experiments in the Chem lab. Halfway through, my group extracted the 'baki' and 'hasil' from the 'turasan' (Ist that distillation in English?) And I asked Yen Tink to help us light the Bunsen burner. We put the liquid hasil onto the 'mangkuk penyejat'. But Yen Tink said no, we had to use the baki and she picked up the liquid and flushed it down into the sink. A split second later, I realised that I was right! Haha... A good thing, time's up came right after that! Funny gal kept apologizing but I was glad enough to have a good laugh to cherish in years to come!

Yo 5S1-ians,

Long time no hear. Its a real pleasant surprise to see someone blog here, especially if its Flo.

Anyway, yes life has changed, time has flown us by and we are older and hopefully wiser. Haha I don't need reminding that our secondary school days are not just a memory away but it has been 4 years. That's cause even my bro (and your sis, Flo) is in Form 5 and are revising for THIER SPM. Oh, SPM ... those were the days.

I too havent been blog-hopping, at least for the past 7 months since I started work. But now that work has decided to take a vacation, I at least have the time to come over here and take a look.

It's been a while since I last posted something, and I just came across Caleb's and Sui Yuan's blog, which posted videos of Caleb's friend and Sui Yuan himself as they celebrated their 21st birthdays with great people - loved ones and family.

And it's been a while since I looked away from thick medical books to blog-hop onto Rachel's, Yen Tink's, and Cher Hui's blogs. People whose voices I haven't heard for months, possibly over a year now. :) To think that I was so used to hearing their chatter daily, in the past.

How many years has it been - four? Nearly five? How much have I forgotten - how much do I remember? It all seems hazy, now that I look back.

We were so young, we were haggling marks from our subject teachers, we were dancing around school rules and holding onto pencilcases and rockheavy schoolbags. We were sweaty and silly and wild. We were so many things. We were seventeen.

And now, most of us are turning twenty-one! (And some of us are perhaps a year younger. :)

Some of us are about to graduate, some of us still have a long way ahead of us, some of us are already in the working scene. We are so grown up, more grown up that I could have ever imagined we could ever be, from the eyes of a bespectacled ponytailed student.

I never imagined we would grow older; I imagined we would just grow more familiar into the world we have chosen for ourselves after we left the comfort of high school.

I never imagined we would forget each other; I imagined we would probably grow apart a little further, just as kites tug at their strings to fly just a little higher, just a little higher.

Here's to each and every one of you.

May you smile brighter and find meaning in everything you do.

May you make a difference and shine in your part of the world.

May each new day teach you something new.

May you be happy, truly happy and truly blessed.

May you live and love louder than you ever imagined to.

A Sunday with Friends

For those of you who never check facebook, yesterday (Sunday) was our "unofficial" 5S1 class reunion at Zen Japanese Restaurant, organised by the ever lovely Sue Bue.

In my excitement to meet up with the most awesome people on earth, I neatly reversed ye ol' faithful Wira Merah into the house gate. 5 minutes later, I left the house with the gate hanging pathetically on its sole remaining hinge, driving a car missing its right tail light to Sunway Pyramid. Meanwhile, the clock on the dashboard cheerfully informed me that I was going to be late.

I arrived at Pyramid at 5 past 12, slotted myself into a vacant lot and hurried down the escalator, where I promptly bumped into Yen Tink. As we wound our way towards Zen past the Sunday shoppers, Yen Tink filled me in on her latest exploits (shopping), her next target of acquisition (Charles & Keith Handbag) as well as getting me to praise her for looking good. Some things never change.

Zen: Jordan, Shu Haur, Caleb and Li Sian were patiently waiting for us at a table for 8. As Timothy and Sue Bee arrived not some 5 minutes later with the news that more people would be coming soon, it quickly became apparent that the table wasn't going to work out. The restaurant staff duly gave us a room to ourselves with a table for 12.

Once Wern Chiet, Zhen Yuan, Ho Meng, and Yin Shean arrived, we started ordering. Tim constantly reminded us not to order too much, recounting his own experience at an "order-buffet" Japanese restaurant (50 plates of sashimi for 4 guys). We conveniently ignored his advice and gleefully ordered away to the tune of heaping plates of unagi, tempura, sashimi as well as 3 "333"s (Soft-Shell Crab Temaki).

Amidst good food and hot Ocha (excepting Tim the contrarian: "How can you all drink hot?"), we discussed movies (Jordan: Public Enemies is OK, Caleb: NOOOOO....lousy!), cameras (a 3 way discussion between Tim, Yen Tink and Caleb), crime, MU vs Malaysia, immigration policies, touts in Pudu and who was going out with who. Sok Keng joined us after awhile while Li Sian had to leave at 1 something-ish. Rachel Ooi also joined us in due course as we happily ate away Zen's profits for the month of July.

After dessert (multiple servings of green tea ice-cream delivered by our overworked waitress), we (minus Rachel, Ho Meng, Yin Shean and Zhen Yuan) adjourned to Pappa Rich for conversation and coffee Round 2. Much juicy gossip, secrets and confessions were extracted during that session (which is why you should always attend class reunions) which left everyone seated around the table feeling rather satisfied (except maybe Tim, target of said extraction). We ended off at 6 and everyone left with promises to keep in touch and meet up again. As I drove home, I quietly wondered how many of us would be able to keep that promise, and for how much longer. Still, as Kelly Clarkson would say: "This may not last but this is now". I'm glad I spent my Sunday with friends.

When I think of Xing Ji, I have this very distinct memory of a group of guys singing some national anthem exalting Lord U-Ry (however you spell his name) as Lord of the Moon in their efforts of pledging their allegiance to the Life on the Moon.

I also think about the phrase "tiny-tot" and his once-squeaky voice, although he ain't so tiny anymore and his voice has tuned down at least 3 and 3/4 octaves lower.

Saya masih ingat bahawa tidak lebih daripada 4 tahun dahulu, saya tidak mempunyai sebarang masalah menulis karangan beribu-ribu perkataan panjang (ini dipanggil teknik hiperbola). Sekarang, setiap ayat yang ditulis oleh saya merupakan satu kesakitan di kawasan punggungku (ini dipanggil teknik penterjemahaan kasar). Soalannya, bagaimanakah tahap penguasaan bahasa Melayu saya boleh merosot dengan begitu mendadak dalam tempoh 4 tahun sahaja? (Ini dipanggil teknik menanyakan soalan dalam karangan. Teknik ini amat digalakkan oleh guru-guru bahasa Melayu kerana kebolehan seseorang penulis karangan berkorelasi langsung dengan bilangan soalan yang berjaya ditanyakan olehnya dalam rencana tersebut. Fakta ini disokong oleh kajian yang dijalankan oleh Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka yang menunjukkan bahawa 98% karangan yang bermutu tinggi mempunyai 87% lebih banyak soalan berbanding dengan karangan bermutu rendah. Teknik baru in pula dipanggil teknik menyelit statistik dalam karangan. Kebenaran statistik tersebut adalah tidak penting)

Gosh, I have no idea why I'm feeling so hyper right now. Maybe it's because I've been having too much fun lately, meeting up with lots of old pals (people whom I can totally be myself with)... or maybe it's because I've been sleeping at 7am and waking up at 3 for the past few days, chasing the ridiculously sacharrine sweet manga of Ichigo 100% (which will definitely put a smile on your face, even if only because it's ecchi, well, mainly because it's ecchi)... or maybe it's because I just found out Jordan has a girlfriend (oops) and my busy-body-gauge-bar is overflowing (not to mention my imagination).... Life is great, if not exactly organised... HAHAHA

Ok, moving on in a non-linear and nonsensical manner:

1. Value: Am I worth RM 5/hour? Hopefully not, I prefer to be worth less and get overpaid. Exacting economic inefficiencies is decidedly delicious, if only because I'm sadistic that way.

So I was visiting this site for the first time since our last gathering, and I'm blown away. Swept off my feet, gripping-tightly-onto-nearest-lamp-post-for-dear-life blown away.

I totally agree with xj and yn on the pressure to produce an interesting, thought-provoking or at least MATURE-sounding post here, considering the posts li hong and xing ji have been churning out.

So I sat in front of my screen and thought for a long time what wisdom had i gathered so far in this year that was actually worth sharing.

Still thinking. Haha.

So, yesterday, I really, *reaaaally* wanted to post something up over here, had a bunch of great ideas on what to post, but as usual, when Procrastination sets in, there goes the mood. :)

It's getting quite Christmassy over here... we've had snow last weekend, and it was jolly thick. I'm looking forward for more though. It only makes sense to be so cold when there's some white slush on the ground to pelter someone with. :0)

Tests here are getting more and more frequent. It's good in a way - get us to study more. But bad in the sense that after we're done with tests for the week, we're so burned out and bored that we tend to slack even more on the following week. :-S

I wonder how is everyone doing now. I've done a little photo collage and stuck it up in front of my desk. It's supposed to motivate me to give my all since I've been addicted to the Internet for the longest time, and I suppose it is working somewhat.

On another note, since I'm not blogging regularly in my own personal blog, maybe I'd haunt this space for a bit. But I'm wondering how and what I should post here, since, after all, this blog is really meant for class activities and occasionally sublime articles from XingJi and LiHong.

Maybe I'll just post up random thoughts. Anything to keep this site from vanishing altogether as the years go by, eh?

Malaysia, politics, the rule of law and other cool stuff

Hello, here's a brief (I'm using the word loosely here) summary of a cool forum which I just attended and which I think you all should know about (i.e. read this and think)

Right, the forum was held at my campus (law faculty NUS) from 2 to 6 and was about the social, political and legal consequences within the Malaysian landscape post March 8 GE 08. The panel of speakers were Malik Imtiaz Sarwar, Rita Sim, Elizabeth Wong, Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tony Pua.

The MC, one prof Tang, categorically stated at the start of the forum that in no way was the forum politically motivated even though the entire panel did not contain a single BN man. He clarified that they had indeed extended invitations to BN to send speakers down for the conference but "they unfortunately could not be here with us". I'm not complaining. It's not as if they (BN) ever had anything useful to say anyway, and it sure made everyone there way more comfortable in speaking their mind.

Anyway, first up was Rita Sim (executive director of Sin Chew publications and deputy chairman of the Institute of Strategic Analysis & Policy Research). She gave a brief intro of Malaysian political history, from Mahathir's transition of power to Abdullah in 04 right up to the present scenario. Important points highlighted during the speech was the fact that the Malays would remain the dominant political power in Msia in the forseeable future (come 2020, they'll make up 70 % of the total population) and other cool stats like how the opposition actually won the popular vote in the peninsular, meaning if not for Sabah and Sarawak, BN would most certainly have lost. Interestingly enough, in GE 08, Sabah and Sarawak voters numbered some 1 million out of 10 million registered voters in Msia (a total of 4 million voters did not register, of which 60% were Malay) but under the Federation of Malaysia agreement, the two states would have a minimum of 25% seats in parliament. So yes, some votes are more equal than others.

After Rita Sim concluded her introduction into the Msian political scenario, Elizabeth Wong (former secretary general of HAKAM and current state assemblyman for Bukit Lanjan under the PKR banner) continued with a speech on federalism in Malaysia and the future political scenario envisaged (ie most optimistic scenario): a two party democracy. She suggested that reformasi and the current political revolution in Msia was really kickstarted way back during the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 - way before the sacking of Anwar really. While the official reason for the severe economic downturn back then was blamed on Soros and his band of evil speculators, a public disquiet started to circulate about the general mismanagement of our nation under BN (which was probably a better explanation of why our country was as f***ed as it was).

Anyway, the moment we were waiting for: Q n A. First question: what is the future of ISA in our country? Tony Pua, not one to miss an oppurtunity to score political points categorically stated that the future pakatan rakyat government would unequivocally reject the ISA in its entirety. The answer was quickly shot down as political rhetoric by the panel of mostly legal and public policy students and staff and the thorny issue of anti-terrorism was raised. Malik Imtiaz further went on to say that the current ISA was very much in breach of our constitution and that however, our penal code and criminal sentencing procedure had been amended to reflect the current international support for anti-terror preemptive action. Rita Sim suggested that if the current ISA is removed, most likely an anti-terror preemptive arrest related legislation would be passed and Malik Imtiaz said he was wondering why the opposition wasn't already pressing for such a position (perhaps something we might be looking forward to? Or not) Anyway, to sum things up: Current ISA = abuse of human rights not in line with constitution. But we will most likely need a similar anti-terror law (perhaps subjected to judicial review?)

Next Question: What of the schism between the two rather conflicting ideology of PAS and DAP. Are they just going to shelf the Islamic State idea and the Malaysian Malaysia idea aside? Wouldn't such rifts create problems down the line if they were to continue to work together. At this juncture, Nurul Izzah (on a side note, she's pretty good looking) pointed out how the act of actually getting the 3 opposition parties to avoid 3 corner fights during this GE was already a mean feat in itself. She pointed out how PKR had many a sleepness night during the PAS-UMNO talks. She however concluded that it was probably better to get stuff like this out of the way early in the relationship than later. Malik Imtiaz suggested that public bickering amongst PAS and DAP might even be a good thing, after all, we wouldn't like another BN where UMNO says something offensive and MCA and MIC is told to shut up and accept it. Tony Pua also added that it is unlikely that either party will shelf their core ideologies but as a matter of pragmatism and democratic evolution, they have agreed to concentrate on the common goals, rather than let their differences sweep them aside. It must be noted that leaders on both side probably have a tough job on their hands placating their hardcore grassroots supporters and to give them credit, they have so far done a pretty decent job of cooperation.

After a brief tea break, the session continued with Nurul Izzah downplaying the idea of protest votes and suggesting instead that to a certain extent, voters were now genuinely receptive of the opposition ideals (a notion that Rita Sim snorts at). She elaborated more about the demography of the urban Malay, their role in politics, the recent Permatang Pauh by-elections and the importance of young people seeking change amongst other things. Tony Pua further elaborated on the accidental rise of civil discourse and civil liberty movement in Malaysia which he credited to a large extent to the BN leadership's incompetency at being authoritarian. Failure to crack down hard enough on dissent led to expose after damaging expose which ultimately discredited BN to the point of no return, at least in the urban belt. There was also talk about the growing awareness among the Sultans of their role as future King-makers (the irony) and Sabah's frog and money politics. In particular, the frank political portrayal of money politics in Sabah and Sarawak highlights the difficulty the opposition will have even if they manage to woo them over, especially given their (the politicians from Sabah and Sarawak) increasing awarness of their political clout in deciding who gets to rule Malaysia. On a side note, Tony Pua is one hell of a sarcastic bastard and a dangerous man to let loose in a forum. Anyway, they probably said alot of other interesting things which I've now forgotten because I lacked the foresight of taking down notes. But the important thing is this: Malaysian politics is changing, and no one knows where we're heading.

Final (and IMO the best) speaker: Malik Imtiaz Shawar. The guy's a famous human rights lawyer, currently representing one Raja Petra Kamaruddin. He was threatened with death when he was legal observer for the Lina Joy case. Malik commented dryly that the other panelists had shunted all the unwanted topics unto his shoulder, mainly issues concerning the state of the judiciary and state of human rights. Anyway, his frank, almost brutal protrayal of Malaysia was scary. Picture this: mass media which were essentially propaganda machines. A compliant judiciary that pays no attention to principles of legal precedence. A police force akin to a private militia. And they fucked GE 08 up. UMNO is shocked, scared and most worrying of all, fighting for survival. More so in light of the horrifying allegations made against Najib. The PM-to-be will not just be fighting for a political career once he takes over the helm of UMNO. Rest assured, he knows that if the opposition ever come to power (and Malik Imtiaz and quite alot of Malaysians aren't exactly holding their breath), he could probably end up in jail if investigations turn up anything nasty. This is his last chance to wield and consolidate power, and the only way BN knows how to do it is to either make people like them or take away people who dislike them in the scariest manner possible. Shock and awe. He (Malik) then proceeded to cite the numerous examples from our colourful history of the government doing just that. Interestingly, we learn that a man (Abdul Malik Hussin) detained during the reformasi movement of 98' was awarded RM2.5 million in damages for torture suffered at the hands of the former IGP while under ISA detention. He then highlighted the very real danger that all those present among the panelists were likely to be detained anytime under the ISA, given the growing desperation of the ruling regime.

What does this mean for us? Simple. We cannot take things lying down. It is in our best interests to keep ourselves well-informed and educated so that we know what are our rights and how to protect them. When push comes to shove and crackdowns are imminent, we must resist. Change does not happen to people sitting in their armchairs. If we relent, the government will then be justified in employing their fear tactics and we risk sliding back to another 50 years of misrule. I'm not saying Pakatan Rakyat is great. Start suggesting dates!!! I'm vouching for either 19 / 20 / 26 / 27 of July. Please tell me if these dates are alright, or whether we should meet up in August, instead. (I'll only be free up to 2nd/3rd of August... coming home for a study break actually. Long story. So I really won't be able to help organize any date beyond those I've mentioned... cos I still got to study!!! I chose weekends because I'm not sure if some people have classes during weekdays.)

Since Tim has moved out from the vicinity of SS17 (was it? can't remember...) anyone willing to offer up their house? Once again, we promise to take out the trash and mop the floor if we have to. Otherwise, we can just meet up at some restaurant. I'm in favour of a house, actually... because it means we come early and leave late... I mean, at a reasonable time, and keep to a good budget and exhibit some cooking skills they gained from living away from good home-cooked food. So. If really nobody can offer up their house or , I'll just have to ask my parents whether I can offer mine.

But it'd be awfully cramped.

Girls are becoming as good as boys at mathematics, and are still better at reading

TRADITION has it that boys are good at counting and girls are good at reading. So much so that Mattel once produced a talking Barbie doll whose stock of phrases included “Math class is tough!”

Although much is made of differences between the brains of adult males and females, the sources of these differences are a matter of controversy. Some people put forward cultural explanations and note, for example, that when girls are taught separately from boys they often do better in subjects such as maths than if classes are mixed. Others claim that the differences are rooted in biology, are there from birth, and exist because girls' and boys' brains have evolved to handle information in different ways

Luigi Guiso of the European University Institute in Florence and his colleagues have just published the results of a study which suggests that culture explains most of the difference in maths, at least. In this week's Science, they show that the gap in mathematics scores between boys and girls virtually disappears in countries with high levels of sexual equality, though the reading gap remains.

Dr Guiso took data from the 2003 OECD Programme for International Student Assessment. Some 276,000 15-year-olds from 40 countries sat the same maths and reading tests. The researchers compared the results, by country, with each other and with a number of different measures of social sexual equality. One measure was the World Economic Forum's gender-gap index, which reflects economic and political opportunities, education and well-being for women. Another was based on an index of cultural attitudes towards women. A third was the rate of female economic activity in a country, and the fourth measure looked at women's political participation.

On average, girls' maths scores were, as expected, lower than those of boys. However, the gap was largest in countries with the least equality between the sexes (by any score), such as Turkey. It vanished in countries such as Norway and Sweden, where the sexes are more or less on a par with one another. The researchers also did some additional statistical checks to ensure the correlation was material, and not generated by another, third variable that is correlated with sexual equality, such as GDP per person. They say their data therefore show that improvements in maths scores are related not to economic development, but directly to improvements in the social position of women.

The one mathematical gap that did not disappear was the differences between girls and boys in geometry. This seems to have no relation to sexual equality, and may allow men to cling on to their famed claim to be better at navigating than women are. However, the gap in reading scores not only remained, but got bigger as the sexes became more equal. Average reading scores were higher for girls than for boys in all countries. But in more equal societies, not only were the girls as good at maths as the boys, their advantage in reading had increased.

This suggests an interesting paradox. At first sight, girls' rise to mathematical equality suggests they should be invading maths-heavy professions such as engineering—and that if they are not, the implication might be that prejudice is keeping them out. However, as David Ricardo observed almost 200 years ago, economic optimisation is about comparative advantage. The rise in female reading scores alongside their maths scores suggests that female comparative advantage in this area has not changed. According to Paola Sapienza, a professor of finance at Northwestern University in Illinois who is one of the paper's authors, that is just what has happened. Other studies of gifted girls, she says, show that even though the girls had the ability, fewer than expected ended up reading maths and sciences at university. Instead, they went on to be become successful in areas such as law.

In other words, girls may acquire an absolute advantage over boys as a result of equal treatment. This is something that society, more broadly, has not yet taken on board. Mattel may wish to take note that among Teen Talk Barbie's 270 phrases concerning shopping, parties and clothes, at least one might usefully have been, “Dostoevsky rocks!”

Recently, the National Islamic Students Association of Malaysia condemned the Malaysian female school uniform (more specifically the white blouse) as being too darn sexy. Among other comments, the vice president of the association claimed that the blouses became a distraction to men whether they liked it or not and that it led to babies born out of wedlock and prostitution. Malaysian schoolgirls were also critized for using their darn sexy white blouses to "attract men to them" thus seeing them "getting molested, having premarital sex and all sorts of things".

On the other hand, we have the MP from Pasir Mas, Mr. Ibrahim Ali suggesting that a large campaign encouraging women to accept polygamy be held to end the increasing problem of divorce in Malaysia, or in his very own words , "Such problems (divorces) happen because women cannot accept polygamy. From a preventive point of view, what about doing a big campaign so that women can accept polygamy?" He further added that ," Women did not understand that when they were pregnant for nine months, or had "problems" when they hit their 50's, their men still wanted to "have fun". So the man wants to marry again, and the wife gets jealous and asks for divorce."

Two seperate problems you say? Not really, my economics training instantly detected the two cases above as a classic case of mismatch of information with regards to supply and demand. Lets see, in case two, men are demanding more sex, and in case one, those young nubile high school girls in their darn sexy white blouses who are out there attracting men are in effect, supplying sex. So somewhat akin to frictional unemployment, the right sex is not being supplied to the people who are demanding it, thus leading to molest, premarital sex and divorce!! The way I see it, students who are attracting men by employing their wily charms as well as their darn sexy white uniforms should be made to marry men who "wanna have fun". This effectively kills two birds with one stone (the above idiom was not chosen for the sake of sexual innuendo....yeah rite). You see, such horny young females would most likely be more receptive towards polygamy because (and I'm taking an extreme leap of faith here by stereotyping them as such, but politicians do it all the time anyway) this might even give them the chance to engage in legal orgies! Plus, if they get married to said men wanting more sex, then the problem of premarital sex would also be solved because by then, all sex would be strictly marital and legally wholesome. Furthermore, the relatively young age of these schoolgirls would guarantee a safe period of around 30+ years before they start having "problems" in their 50's ( product has good shelf life)

So you see, there's no need to change the uniforms or hold campaigns to encourage polygamy, just set up a matchmaking service between schoolgirls in sexy white uniforms and older married men who wanna "have fun" and Malaysia will be a much happier place to live in. Make love not war as they say. Peace out!

Nothing much to say, really. Just that I miss all of you people, and finally moving on with life is weird. Before yesterday, I had this weakness of holding on to good old memories, but I suppose all happy endings must come to an end, whatever that means.

Anyways. :-) To all those who are taking exams soon, study hard! You can do it, like, duh! cos you're Science One material. Just keep at the books, people! (I sound like a horse-driver but nevermind...)

And to those people who are having spring breaks or Easter breaks or honeymoon breaks or whatever breaks,

LUCKY YOU!!!

You better enjoy them to the max on my behalf, because I only got 2 measly... I mean, marvelous days off. Oh, well. One mustn't complain. :-P

Will you meet up with friends, play and spend all your money??

or will you go like "what the hell man, whatever i do, it doesn't make any difference..so y do anything? just sleep slack until u die.."
actually, you can do something that will make a lot of difference..spend your last day buying LOTS of insurance =p

FOOD FOR THOUGHT 2:
Y on earth are the people producing the things most essential for our survival-- food --most often the ppl that are the poorest??
I know you will say: yeah..its demand and supply, almost everyone can be farmers...not everyone can be doctors bla bla bla..
but still..

y do financial traders, who we can totally live without, and who doesn't do much good(at least none that i know of) earn so DAMN MUCH!! while farmers(at least in the third world where there are less subsidies unlike the west) are struggling to survive!!
i mean..those ppl that worked be4...do u think those working as waiters, working in offices... deserve to earn more than construction workers??? or your maids???

Anyway, I think I'll just give you a brief outline on how i'm killing time these days waiting for my A-level results to come out...

In between my packed daily schedule (yeah rite), I have managed to run a grand total of three (3) times (adios muscleman), learn cooking from my mum, went for an undang seminar (lihong says only 6 hours wasted wor), fantasized about starting my own comic strip, bitch slapped myself out of it, and started fantasizing about other stuff instead. Sometimes I remember to bathe. I plan to watch Sweeney Todd and Meet the Spartans next. Any takers (I promise to bathe first)?

WOW. Suddenly there's a whole flurry of activity here!! No one can say we 5s1-ers aren't efficient people man!!

And hmmm.... I'm supposed to update about myself. Well, basically, *grins sheepishly*, I've been... around... for the last 6 months or so. Most of you whom I've kept in touch with already know most of it, but let's just refresh for those who don't alright?

June- Rachel finishes A-level at Taylor's.
July- Rachel goes on mission trip to Cambodia. Rachel volunteers at Kiwanis Down Syndrome Home.
August- Rachel goes to work as a temporary full-time telemarketer selling personal accident insurance(Those who don't know what's that, ask me. Heck, ask me about insurance! If my company did do their job properly, and I my homework, I have quite a bit of insurance knowledge in my head =D )
late September- Rachel stops work to study for SAT and to apply UCAS. (For those who're going to ask why didn't I apply the year before- long, complicated story.)
October- Rachel sits for SAT1. And she can't remember what she did for the rest of that month=)
November- Rachel can't remember anything productive she did for the month, except study for SAT2 (Do remember that it's almost 5 months since she did any real studying and that she has a very very short term memory). She recalls a myriad of movies, yumcha sessions, singing k sessions and blogging =)
December- Rachel slaves through US applications and essays, attends church camp and visits the whole of North-East China.
January- Rachel goes back to volunteering at Kiwanis as a quarter-time volunteer (that's what u call someone who volunteers less than what a part-timer would right?).

The future- foggy and uncertain. But Rachel will definitely be a medical student at the Monash Malaysia campus for the February semester. After that? My guess is as good as yours. =)

I don't think anyone posted up the December reunion photo here, so I shall do the honours =D

If you can't recognise some of the people, you know you're in DEEP trouble and should seek emergency treatment at this blog immediately. What treatment? Ask Flo =P

Me ar? Well, to find out more about me visit my blog . Why would you want to do so you ask? Well, because it's Visit cnxc323 '08. So pop along my blog to read about what I usually eat in the jolly ol' boring city of Southampton.

Well, if you don't want to read my blog even after that Visit adverts we are so exposed to, I can give you a summary: Basically what you can find in my blog is a gazillion photos of pasta as I eat that like, well, alot. Yea, sick of eating my own pasta already as nice as they taste. Muahaha.

So anyway, yesterday was my last paper for my semester one exam. Was horrid. But oh well, Hope I did good enough. For those of you not in the know, I'm doing Electronics Engineering in the University of Southampton. Why am I here? Well, coz it's THE best school for electronics, outside the US and I am just lazy to apply to the US. So there. I'm here. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to Southampton by train here and trains here costs two bombs or £22 to be exact, AFTER discount. Yea... I shan't be taking the train no more, I'll take the bus more often.

Haven't seen no snow yet since I got here. GLOBAL WARMING. Bah. Thanks to everyone and their wasteful habits I don't get no snow HERE in the YOO KAY. So yea. Stop being wasteful everyone. Global warming WILL destroy us all! Recycle, turn off lights if you don't need them, turn your aircond down to 23 degrees celcius and walk instead of drive.

Well.

Where do I start?

You guys know I'm in Prague, yeah?

Yeah I'm probably the only CHS-ian studying in Prague, come to think of it.

I should feel so privileged. Hehe...

Yeah, so far, it's been a blessing... I'm learning a lot - about growing, about taking charge of your life, and currently I'm learning discipline and how not to depend so much on other people, though I like to sometimes.

Maybe this abroad thingymajigo experience is helping me with growing up and shaping me into someone... Growing up definitely. I bought my first lipstick today if you want a good example. :-P (I usually borrow my mom's.) And in other aspects too... there is this sense of freedom that if not properly controlled can rule your life. For example, I think I might have been going out too often and not sticking to my books when I should. Which has to change from today onwards... if I want to get home by this summer.

And the people I meet... It's amazing... well, besides a huge Malaysian group, I have met people from all over... from NZ right to Tanzania right to Slovakia right to China right to America right to Ukraine, etc. etc. Prague is like a melting pot of races. Especially in the city where the foreigners are many.. In the smaller towns, we rarely find foreigners, though. It's just amazing... and most of them I met at church.. I'm attending an International church which pretty much feels like home. And I've found a good group of friends whom I am able to blend with. :-) Thank God.

School is okay, too. I've got some pretty cool lecturers, and their English put some of ours to shame, I'd say. I wish I could speak Chinese as well as they can speak English. But oh well... that reminds me, I've really got to have some sort of coaching when I get back. I seriously HAVE TO LEARN MANDARIN. I know, I know... what with you guys speaking English half the time, I didn't learn much. XD

But I love you guys all the same. :-)

Otherwise... yeah. That's pretty much it for now, at least. I miss high school. I just came back from a choir by a congregation of more than 10 high schools from all over the world which blew me off my feet... I'll post the link on my blog sometime soon and you guys can go check youtube. And they did it all in 3 days, can you believe it. It really made me miss school and the chances that I had to be involved in the singing community.

Right...i'll get straight to the point...who wants to go collect 1119 cert like some time soon? we can get our certs, harass the teachers and then climb the school gates all over again...actually, i've never climbed the...oh wait...i did...anyway...the point is if there's anyone who wants to collect the cert and at the same time meet up, drop a line here saying when u wanna collect, what u wanna do after collecting (movie, shopping, lunch, duck hunting etc.)

Randomness

Well, I went back to CHS today for KRS' orientation and OMG, there was alot of people in school and on a Saturday morning. Maybe I hadn't been to school for a long time, or maybe it was the first activity Saturday for the month or maybe just, well I miss school.

Anyway, I saw Xin Ni and she was there to collect her SPM cert (it really is kinda late, but who haven't collect you better do before it turns into some rough paper to be used by people like Li Hong who don't give a damn where they do their workings), and then since I just remembered about the 1119 cert, I too followed her to the office.

Mr Tham (remember him ?) was the only teacher there and at first, he asked us to come back during office hours which were 9-5 on weekdays. But maybe it was Xin Ni's undeniable charm that persuaded him to rammage through the drawers to search for the certs. He asked which year and she said 2005, which made him look shocked for awhile.

Anyway, I too collected my 1119 cert and was surprised to see we were the first 2 people to collect the certs. Its nice by the way, better than the SPM cert. So for those who haven't collected them, collect your 1119 cert !!!

So ya, that was basically it. I realise CHS during the day and on the nights I go back to play basketball is very different. I was just there last night and it was all so quiet, as compared to this morning....

Anyway, don't forget CHS, do visit some time soon. And collect your cert.

I think I am officially lazy and screwed up... not that you guys didn't know it before...just that now it's official...it lends an extra weight of importance to it (just a smidgen, mind)... So I'm in the middle of my A-levels... really...smack dab...like equal amounts of papers sitting before and after me...and what do I do? Watch Stardust at 10pm on a weekday....wtf... mind you, 2 of my other friends were just as crazy as me (nearly missed the last bus back...but oh is the movie great)... The only difference is that post-stardust, they've started studying again...while I am...blogging...reading blogs... and watching horrible youtube renditions by one steven lim of Singapore Idol (In)fame... the purpose of this post? Just another attempt at escapism to postpone my reading of econs... And the worst part.... I'm not even worried... Gosh I'm sick! (Ironically, I'm worried about not being worried...like meta-meta worry)....ahh...lunch time...another morning wasted... *pop*
